Professor Imad Barghouti, a Palestinian astrophysicist at Al Quds University, was arrested in 2014, 2016 and again in 2021. The Israelis incarcerated him for months and even years, although they never convicted him of anything. His only ‘crime’, it seems, was his public support for the cause of Palestinian freedom, for which the Israelis were prepared to disrupt his teaching, research and right to a peaceful life. They have once again released him, as Scientists for Palestine report. We can only hope he is not arrested again.

We are very happy to announce that professor Imad Barghouti has finally been released today, after 6 months of detention. He is back with his family and he is extremely grateful to the people around the world that supported him in these last few months. From the images and the video of his release, which you can find on our Instagram and Facebook page, you can see that he lost a considerable amount of weight due to the little amount of food that Palestinian prisoners are given in Israeli jails.
As academics and conscientious individuals, we must condemn the arbitrary detentions of Palestinians, of which Prof. Barghouti’s imprisonment is just one of the countless examples. |
